At the very beginning of the third millennium, Signs and indices of huge transformation in the geopolitical, social and cultural landscape of the world started to appear. These signs were so apparent that historians and intellectuals soon recognized that 9/11 was a watershed event that would mark the beginning of a new era in world history. The prospects of what came to be called the post-9/11 world were by and large horrifying and gloomy. The fact that the first 15 years of the new millennium have been turbulent in diverse aspects makes predicting the course of events extremely difficult. Global politics, security, the economy, media and academic discourses and even geographical borders have undergone some drastic changes. Unpredictable events like 9/11, the war on terror, economic crises, the Arab Spring, the collapse of dictatorships, coups d état and the return of controversy over the clash of civilizations thesis among others have had considerable effects on individuals, communities and governments. “Uncertainty” has been, perhaps, the major characteristic of this new era in world history.
